Tent caterpillars are common during spring whereas fall webworms are common in the fall.
Fall webworms are periodic pests of trees which seldom adversely affect the tree's health. The only time they might be a problem is when they remove all the leaves from a new tree.
The management choices include these:
- Ignore the problem; the tree will survive.
- Disrupt the web by tearing it apart so that the birds can feast.- If the webbing is within reach, cut off that portion of the branch and either burn it (if it's safe to do) or crush it.
