Tree and surrounding plants are turning black

Asked August 10, 2018, 6:33 PM EDT

I have a large flowering tree on my property that seems to be turning black on the bark and leaves as well as surrounding plants. It has even started to kill off and turn a small area of my lawn black also? As I took pictures I noticed (in the third picture) these clusters which are dripping liquid. Help?

Hi,
You have tulip tree scale. The "black substance" covering the bark and leaves is sooty mold which forms on the honeydew which is excreted by the scale insects. For more information on tulip tree scale: https://ento.psu.edu/extension/factsheets/tuliptree-scale
