A pear tree in our new yard

Asked August 10, 2018, 10:05 AM EDT

We've just moved into this house in Carrollton Township and there is a large, fruit-bearing pear tree. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the variety before we became adventurous and tried to ripen and eat them. Wouldn't want to poison the children!

Based on the general shape of the fruit and the age of the tree I would guess Bartlett. In southern Michigan Barlett start ripening in late August to early September, depending on how ripe they are picked. The lower pear in the picture is not typical of Bartlett, but the top pear is typical. I have included a picture of Bartlett fruit for comparison. I think your children are pretty safe eating pears.
