Mechanical remediation of Japanese stilt grass.

Asked August 8, 2018, 1:11 PM EDT

I understand that there is a window in the growing season of stilt grass that one can mow it before it develops seed wherein it won't have enough time to redevelop seed that season. Is there a time period for Washington County/Berkeley County for mowing to be effective, or must one wait for flowers to appear? Using Roundup or burning with a Weed Dragon is not an option because of erosion potential.

Hello and thanks for using the Ask an Expert System.

As you already know Japanese Stiltgrass is extremely difficult to control. While a precise cutting window cannot be determined, cutting the plants in early August should be late enough to prevent the plant from growing new flowers and producing seed. However much depends on the weather. You can find more information on this plant and control measures in the Penn State Extension publication Japanese stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum).
