White Lacey Hydrangae

Asked August 6, 2018, 7:04 PM EDT

I have a beautiful lacemop? hydrangae in our front yard. I cut it back a little last year but with all the rain, it has grown to be huge- 7-8 feet high and falling over. It’s beautiful still but needs a trim this fall. Suggestions??

It looks like your type of hydrangea is a Panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata). These bloom on the current season's wood. The best time to do major pruning on them is in the late winter/early spring, before new leaf emergence. At that time you can cut it back and shape the plant as you wish. If you want to control the height now, you could also cut some of the flowers and enjoy them inside. https://extension.umd.edu/sites/extension.umd.edu/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/HG%20106_...
