Pear - variety ID question in Carver County, Minnesota

Asked August 5, 2018, 4:51 PM EDT

We want help identifying this pear variety. This pear tree grows in the yard, it's an older tree - trunk is more than 15" diameter. Fruit are green with red blushingcurrently 3-4 inches long but grow some larger. First year here so I am not sure of fruit ripening times. Photo taken 4-Aug-2018. Any/all help appreciated.

Thank you for the question. I can't tell you for sure which variety you have but here's a link to our publication on growing pear trees: https://extension.umn.edu/fruit/growing-pears-home-garden. You can scroll down to "Selecting Plants" and review the pears known to grow here. Because the pears are blushing and large, I guess that your tree might be a Summercrisp pear (https://trees.umn.edu/nursery-tour/species/supe), introduced by the U of M in 1985, or a Patten pear introduced in 1934, (http://www.hardyfruittrees.ca/catalog/pear-tree/patten).

Thank you for contacting Extension.
