sick rhubarb

Asked July 31, 2018, 2:49 PM EDT

Last year the rhubarb plants in front of Raven Landing Center grew beautiully, with little care except lots of water. This year they look like the attached pictures. We've tried trapping voles, and recently added more plant food. Any ideas? Karen Parr

This looks like a nutrient deficiency to me. A soil test would sure make things clear. I recommend submitting a sample to Brookside Laboratories ( Be sure to request analysis package S001AN. When you get the results, send them to me and I'll tell you what they mean.

In the absence of a soil test, I would recommend 6 pounds/100 square feet of 8-32-16 fertilizer.
