Mosquito spraying around vegetable garden

Asked July 26, 2018, 3:39 PM EDT

Hi, My neighbor had Mosquito Squad spray his yard yesterday. A privacy fence divides our properties and I have 6 huge raised bed all organic vegetable garden beds about 8 feet from the fence. I grow LOTS of veggies. I am having a hard time researching the relative safety of this spraying. Can you advise me? Thanks,

You need to contact the local franchise that did the spraying. Ask them what product they sprayed. They are required by law to tell you what registered pesticide they used. Get the specific chemical ingredients. They should provide you with a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) or the label (which tells what insects it affects). You can call the National Pesticide Information Center for more information at: 1-800-858-7378.

Each state has different pesticides regulations, but in general mosquito spraying companies around here use pyrethoids, which are synthetic versions of naturally occurring pyrethrins. Pyrethrins are organic compounds derived from plants that affect the nervous system of insects. They are strong contact pesticides affecting a broad spectrum of insects. They generally have a residual that lasts about two weeks, meaning they are effective on the targeted insects for that amount of time.

Maryland also has a mosquito control office, here, that might be helpful:
