Magnolia Tree Scale

Asked July 25, 2018, 4:17 PM EDT

Hello, We have a magnolia tree that has scale on it and we are looking to see if it can be treated? It is covered with flies, bees and ants that are eating the honeydew produced from the scale. We would like to save the tree if possible. Is there a professional arborist that you can refer us that handles this type of problem? Thank you,

Yes your tree can be saved. Using horticultural oil in the fall and early spring help smother the nymphs. However, you also can use a systemic insecticide that will be brought up into the tree. Here are links to our pub on Magnolia Scale (it is a soft scale) and a link where you can find a certified arborist in your area. Click on Find An Arborist and put in your zip code to narrow the search. http://www.treesaregood.org/ https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-insects/scale-insects-minnesota-trees-and-shrubs#soft-scal...
