Grass in sandy soil

Asked July 24, 2018, 9:12 PM EDT

Hi, I moved to Brooklyn Park last fal and am having trouble with my lawn, specifically grass hit doing well in sunny areas. My old lawn in Golden Valley has much more thick soil. Any suggestions on grass in sandy soil?

The most immediate thing to do is to have your soil tested. Here is a link to the soil testing lab at the University of Minnesota. The instruction/submission form is a pdf file linked to on this site:

The results you get back will include information on the nature of your soil and fertilizer recommendations. Most likely if you have sandy soil, there will be a suggestion of adding organic material. You will then be faced with prospect of seeding your yard. The following will give you information about doing this including what might be involved in sodding your yard as an alternative.
