Juglone tolerant trees

Asked July 24, 2018, 9:01 PM EDT

Hello, I just cut down a large black walnut, and want to plant a tree near the stump to replace the shade. Ideally, would like either nice fall color or nuts/fruits for wildlife, medium sized tree. I am considering : catalpa, american hornbeam, and sourwood. I have read that catalpa is tolerant but I am finding mixed results when searching the other two. Any advice? The soil is moist but lots of shale where we would plant. Nearby are red maples, hackberry, mulberry, and willow oak.

Hi. I found this useful publication from Iowa state university. https://www.extension.iastate.edu/news/2005/jul/070701.htm I think you would be fine with any of the trees you mentioned.
