Aspens dying

Asked July 23, 2018, 4:01 PM EDT

We have a few aspens in our front yard and a lot of the branches look dead, and the tree appears to be dying. The dying limbs are covered in something (see image), can you tell me what it is and if there is anything I can do for the tree?

Thank you for your question. I think the issue might be oystershell scale. See link below. You tree looks to be very large and perhaps it might be "older." Info in link says life expectancy of aspens in an urban area is 25 years. Perhaps this tree has reached it's life expectancy. Also, it is recommended that when crown becomes thin, removal of the tree is recommended.
