Choke cherries - yuck

Asked July 22, 2018, 12:16 AM EDT

I have two choke cherry trees that I am contemplating cutting down. But I heard a rumor that choke cherries are necessary for pollenating other cherries. True or false? I have honey bee boxes on my property. Thanks

Choke cherries obviously pollinize other choke cherries, but as they are related to, but a different species from cultivated cherries, I would not assume they were effective pollinizers for cultivated cherries. Among the cultivated cherries, tart cherries are self fruitful but sweet cherries are not and so if you are growing sweet cherries you will require a pair of compatible cultivars for good fruit set. I would say bout them that chokecherries are very good pollinator plants, which probably includes honeybees.
