Small flying stinging or biting insects

Asked July 17, 2018, 4:03 PM EDT

I was pruning an established eupnymus bush and was attacked by small flying insects that either stung or bit my hands. My knuckles were red and swollen. it's been 24 hrs, the swelling and redness has subsided, now my hands just feel itchy. I didn't get a great look at the insect. Do you know what it might be and the best way to get rid of it.

We cannot say for sure what you are dealing with. The insects may have been mosquitoes or biting gnats. We do not recommend a control. Wear gloves, long sleeved shirts and pants when pruning. You may also need to apply an insect repellent.
