Eliminate food from the composting mix.
If pets are fed outdoors, remove all dishes immediately after the animal has fed. Do not allow pets that are fed outdoors to have on-demand access to food.
Cause the compost to heat up and decompose more rapidly.

  • Water is usually the most limiting factor in the compost process.
  • Add non-meat sources of nitrogen such as pea or bean vines, stalks, and pods; manures; chemical fertilizers dissolved in water; or alfalfa pellets.
  • Turn the entire compost pile when doing either of the above.
Deploy traps near the composting area. Likely there are rats elsewhere on the property, so trap more broadly too. Eliminate other sources of rodent habitat like brush or trash piles, and hiding places in general, It's far more difficult to discourage rats when the property is on or near a creek.
