Can anything be done for “wet wood weeping” in a red oak?

Asked July 16, 2018, 5:48 PM EDT

I have a mature red oak (16” at chest high) that is exhibiting weeping from an old branch hole and from a crack in the bark below it. The canopy looks fine, no wilting or excessive die-back so far. Is there anything that can be done to help it heal without exposing the tree to possible oak wilt?

Hello. With this kind of problem I always recommend that you consult with a certified arborist in your area. The website www.treesaregood.org will lead you through a process to find one. You are right to be concerned about oak wilt so do not do any trimming or cutting until the arborist takes a look.
