What kind of moth is this?

Asked July 16, 2018, 2:46 PM EDT

I was once told that if I see something I have never seen before to take a photo of it. I was watching for pollinator activity in my prairie Thursday evening (I think) and saw a large moth I have never seen before. It was the size of a small hummingbird and it was interested in the nectar of the Bergamot plants almost exclusively. It seems to resemble at least one type of Sphinx Moth, at least based on photos I found online. Sorry the photo is not better - the moth was really quick and this was the best photo I managed to get.

I believe it is a Hemaris thysbe - Hummingbird Clearwing. Compare to images here: https://bugguide.net/node/view/2638.

Yes! That looks like the one I saw even though my photo is not the best. Many thanks for the analysis and reply!!
