Broccoli and Brussel Sprouts!

Asked July 13, 2018, 12:02 PM EDT

I have the above listed vegetables in my garden. It is a brand new raised bed garden. My tomatoes, zuccchini and squash are doing very well - as are my eggplants. The broccoli and brussel sprouts not so well. The broccoli is growing, but the leaves have a lot of holes in them, as do the brussel sprouts. The brussel sprouts are abot 3 inches tall and seem to have stopped growing as well. My jalapeno plant doesn't seem very happy either - kind of off color and not growing like I'd expect. Any suggestions? Thank so much for your help! We just threw a bunch of plants in to see what would grow, as we're somewhat new to vegetable gardening. Thank you!!

Hi,

Brussels sprouts need cool weather to grow, and we have had very hot weather to date. I would just leave the plants and hopefully, they will revive when the weather cools. Brussels sprouts take a long time to grow and bear (you usually start seeing sprouts in the farmers' markets in late Aug - early Sept). https://bonnieplants.com/growing/growing-brussels-sprouts/

It looks as though you have some pest damage on the leaves, perhaps cabbage worms. The damage looks to be minimal. If you'd like, you can cover the plants with a light protective barrier: https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-insects/caterpillars-cole-crops

The jalapeno needs a lot of sun and moisture.https://extension.umn.edu/vegetables/growing-peppers-home-gardens#watering-171360

Congrats on the garden!
