What is this type of grass?

Asked July 11, 2018, 11:14 PM EDT

We have a type of grass coming up - first in garden areas and pavement cracks, now taking over sections of our lawn. It's light green with fairly broad blades. My wife calls it crabgrass, but it's not the type of crabgrass I'm familiar with. I've attached some photos. Can you tell me what it is, and how we can keep it out or our bluegrass lawn? Thanks!

Good afternoon,

I think you have goosegrass, scientific name Elusine indica, which is similar to crabgrass and can be controlled the same way. Here is a link to a great article from our own Colorado State University Extension Service that covers how to control annual weed grasses.

Good luck!
