Robin's eggs not hatching

Asked July 10, 2018, 9:51 AM EDT

We have a robin nesting under our porch roof. Interestingly, she is on the roof of a house sparrow's house. But, though we noticed her there 3 weeks ago, the eggs have not hatched. Seems like a long incubation! Perhaps infertile eggs?

Robins will lay one egg per day and then begin incubating once all the eggs are laid. The incubation period is about 2 weeks. That means the whole process is close to 3 weeks. I suspect you will see the young hatch very soon. If it goes for another week without hatching, the eggs maybe infertile.

Silly me! I only needed to go up a ladder to find that, indeed, the eggs had hatched and the babies are hungry. Just couldn't see their little beaks from the ground as I had expected to. Parents now busy feeding.

Thanks for your answer....makes sense.
