covering tree roots

Asked July 9, 2018, 4:46 PM EDT

Can the surface roots of beech and maple trees be covered with dirt? Heard it will kill the tree but not sure if that is true.

You can cover most tree roots with a few inches of soil (3-4"), but a deep covering of soil with damage the roots. We do not recommend it unless the trees are robust and it must be done.

Beech, however, are extremely sensitive and we do not recommend that you apply any soil to the roots. It may be helpful to mulch between the roots.
