What is this plant?

Asked July 9, 2018, 4:33 PM EDT

Hereford, Maryland; farm property; found multiple areas; goats won’t touch (hired to eat up some of the yard). Attached is picture. I can’t seem to quite match up to any plant description online. Thanks in advance for help.

This is tree of heaven, a foreign invasive tree. The botanical name is Ailanthus altissima. You'll want to kill this noxious tree. Here is our webpage: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/problems/tree-heaven-ailanthus

Look especially at the link at the bottom entitled "Tree of Heaven Fact Sheet".

This is a serious invasive tree, but it is possible to kill it.

You should be warned that a new invasive insect, the spotted lanternfly, is now surrounding Maryland and will probably be found here this year. This destructive pest is especially drawn to Tree of Heaven (they both come from Asia) and if you leave these trees on your property, they will become a magnet for them. Search 'spotted lanternfly' on our website.
