flies in the garden

Asked July 9, 2018, 11:32 AM EDT

We have been overrun with green flies, the type that is usually found around garbage but is in our yard and garden. There are thousands of them...on the lawn, in the flowers, everywhere! Why and how can we get rid of them? Thanks for any help you can provide!

Thank you for your question.

Here is the response from the U of M Extension entomologist....

"They are describing blow flies. It is difficult to provide a good answer without more information. There has to be some source that is allowing the production of such large numbers. It could be that the source of infestation is adjacent to but not on their property. Blow flies commonly visit flowers so it is typical to find them there. However, that would not explain why there is such a large number to begin with. It is critical to discover what and where the source of these flies are. There is not control without addressing this."

Hope this helps.
