Pruning in July?

Asked July 9, 2018, 11:29 AM EDT

Can I still do a hard prune to an overgrown badly shaped Helleri Holly hedge in July? How late in the season is Ok?

Although Heller Holly tolerates hard pruning well, the temperatures this July (2018) have been high with scanty rainfall in Delaware State . Shrubs and lawns are having a rough time. The best time to prune is early spring, and late winter. Hollies can be pruned in the summer if temperatures are favorable (maximum daily temperatures averaging 80F to 85F) with some moisture on the ground and if one is just trimming to size which might not necessarily be a hard prune. Where is your location? Are you experiencing a hot summer (temperatures up to the 90F’s and beyond for a whole week without rains)? For more information please visit your local county agent.

We did have a long hot period with no rain. Now we having a week of rain. I've had at about 2 inches this week and forecast suggests another such week We did do a trim to shape it.
