Anoka County Minnesota soil preparation planting grass seed

Proper soil preparation is essential to establish turf that is vigorous and sustainable in the long run. The following bulletin explains the steps needed to accomplish this.

It's important to eliminate existing weeds and to incorporate any amendments and fertilizer into the top six inches of existing soil. Do not layer black dirt over the planting area.

Late summer and early fall is the best time to plant grass seed so there is plenty of time to prepare the soil as recommended.
