Recurring dead grass patch

Asked July 7, 2018, 9:07 PM EDT

I have a patch of grass 2ft x2ft that dies off in the summer . I dug up the patch last yr and put a piece of sod in place of it and the sod took but the same piece turned yellow again this month Any thoughts on why this small patch of grass continues to die? Thanks

We can't say for sure what has happened. Probe down to see if anything is under the soil in that spot. You can also have the soil tested. (Search 'soil testing' on our website for instructions.)

There could have been a chemical spill there--including overapplication of fertilizer (fertilizer is salts)--which may take several years to be washed through the soil.

You can also dig up the first few inches of soil and replace with new top soil.
