Two Tone Maple Tree

Asked July 3, 2018, 12:40 PM EDT

Half the leaves are plain green, half the leaves are a two-tone green and yellow. How could this happen?

The photo lacks the detail needed to be sure, but we think at one time all of the tree's leaves were variegated and it was grown to display this ornamental characteristic.

Sometimes plants with variegated leaves revert to the normal green color. Parts that revert are usually more vigorous and if they are not removed the entire plant will become green. The tree shown in the photo may be reverting.
