There are several types of dogwood trees, Cornus florida cultivars; and Cornus kousa, Chinese dogwood. There are also shrubs such as Cornus sericea, redosier dogwood.

Dogwood trees are susceptible to some diseases such as anthracnose and powdery mildew. We recommend planting resistant varieties of dogwood. Do not plant straight species of Cornus florida. Here is our publication on dogwood and resistant varieties.

July is a very stressful time to plant. Dogwoods are best established in the spring. They are understory trees and grow best in morning sun and afternoon shade. Here is our website on planting trees and shrubs and post planting care https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/trees-and-shrubs/planting-process
