bamboo yard debris

Asked June 30, 2018, 2:08 PM EDT

We are trying to clear out some bamboo, it is the clumping, not running, variety. Not sure if that makes any difference as to how to dispose of it. Does it compost like other yard debris and should it go in the yard debris can? If not, I guess it just goes in the garbage? Thanks, Rebecca

Thank you for using Ask an Expert for help with your bamboo disposal.

I contacted the Metro Recycling hotline at 503-234-3000 and asked your question. They said that this material can be put into the regular yard debris can. Metro's composting facility raises the temperature high enough that the bamboo stems and rhizomes will be completely broken down.

If you need further information on any home recycling dilemmas, they are a great source. The hotline is open from 8:30am to 5:00pm, Monday through Saturday. They also have email connection: mri@oregonmetro.gov
