getting a vine to climb a tree

Asked June 26, 2018, 8:35 AM EDT

I have a small dead (sweet cherry) tree that I am keeping and I want to train a honeysuckle vine to climb it. I have planted the vine but don't know how to attach it to the tree. Is there some kind of hardware I should use? Thank you.

The native honeysuckle, Lonicera semervirens is a twining vine that needs a support structure to grow on. They twist their stems around an upright support. Perhaps you can set up a small trellis that you can weave the weave the new shoots through the sections of the trellis, and keep doing this as the vines grow. Once the vine gets some size you may be able to weave/wrap around the tree. Once the vine reaches the top of the tree start weaving the stems downward.
