Worms?

Asked June 24, 2018, 9:07 AM EDT

I found this cluster of worms(?) on a bike path in a wooded area and am curious about what they are. The total length of the cluster is about 5 inches. I have included two pictures.

These are the larvae of Sciarid fungus gnats, also called dark-winged fungus gnats. It's a mass migration and only occurs in wet years. Here is more about them: http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/fungus-gnats Totally harmless.
