Tree, what is wrong?

Asked June 22, 2018, 8:21 PM EDT

Almost all of the leaves on this tree have black spots, turning yellow, falling to the ground as if it is fall. there are 3 or 4 places with what looks like a mass of spider webs, thick, and leaves inside are dead. this started about 2 weeks ago. This also happened last year. We also do not know what type of tree this is. thank you for your help! Patrice

Patrice,
This looks like a mulberry tree and it sounds like you have fall webworm. You can find information about these insects -- and what you can do -- here on our website. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/fall-webworm-trees

Mulberry trees commonly get leaf spots that cause some yellowing and leaf drop. The leaf spots are caused by a fungus and it is worse in very rainy seasons like we are having this year. There is no cure for it and no treatment is recommended.
