Soil sampling

Asked June 21, 2018, 1:35 PM EDT

My plants are not growing well in the sandy loam burms we built, despite adding potting soil and a compost mix from local suppliers. How can I test my soil to see what is missing? Thank you.

Hi, There are no local soil labs in Central Oregon, but you can send out a soil sample to be tested. Here is a list of labs that do testing. You can get a basic soil test or more extensive. It may not be something missing but instead too much of something that affects plant growth as well. Here is the publication that list labs in the PNW. https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/em8677 Generally, adding 1/3 compost to 2/3 native soil should be sufficient. You can also bring some plant samples to our plant clinic in Redmond if you want us to try and trouble shoot with you. Thanks, Amy Jo
