Hibiscus buds being eaten by birds

Asked June 21, 2018, 11:17 AM EDT

Hi, I have never had a problem like this before with red hibiscus in 25 yrs. Yellow finch is eating all the red buds off as they appear- so sad! Interestingly, they are not eating the yellow hibiscus buds. Any safe sprays/ ideas for this? Thank you!

I am wondering if there are mites or other small insects on the buds and the birds are actually eating them and damaging your buds in the process. Please examine your buds with a magnifying glass to rule that out. I don't know of any repellent which will work for birds. You could try covering the plant with row cover material to preserve the flowers but them you won't be able to enjoy them although the birds probably will ignore them once open. Sorry.
