RED BUGS ON BEE BALM (could be cone flower, not sure)

Asked June 18, 2018, 12:00 PM EDT

I just noticed these numerous red bugs on my bee balm (wildflower bed, could be something else) and worry that they will find my vegetable garden and cause damage.

Baltimore County Maryland flowers: annuals and herbaceous perennials pest insects and mites

These are aphids and it is not unusual to see them on Rudbeckia plants at this time of year. When their populations become high, natural predators and parasitoids (beneficial insects) eventually catch up to them and help control them naturally. You can read about this type of "biocontrol" here on our website: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/aphids-trees-and-shrubs
A strong spray of water with a garden hose is also something you can do to dislodge them from your plants.
