Weed Identification

Asked June 16, 2018, 2:47 PM EDT

Hello. My fiance and I just recently purchased our home and are unsure of which plants are safe to keep in the area surrounding our home. We would like to forage and keep medicinal use plants, and remove the toxic ones. We also have a cat and raise rabbits which we forage for as well. However this plant pictured is not listed in your catalog. It does not have a strong odor, or flavor, the scent is more similar to the foliage of floral arrangements. It has a hairy stem and seems to be spreading underground through rhizomes, off of a running root system, instead of bulbs. The current height of the tallest we have is approximately 2 feet tall. As this is our first season we have not yet seen it flower. Your help is greatly appreciated.

You could let it flower to be sure, but we think this looks like the weed Dog Fennel (Eupatorium capillifolium).

Compare with photo of young plant, also found in Wicomico County, here: https://marylandbiodiversity.com/viewSpecies.php?species=4271
