When is the best time and how do you prune Bing Cherry trees. I have two trees, 4-5 ft tall and don't know the age.

Portage County Ohio

The best time to prune all fruit trees is in March and April. That is the time that the leaves are not out and you can see the structure of the tree and what you are doing. A broken or rubbing branch should be removed whenever you see it. We prune all stone fruit trees with an open center. That lets air and light into the center of the tree and keeps it shorter. Shortness is good. If you do not net a stone fruit tree, the birds will get all the fruit. A shorter tree is easier to net and un-net.

There is a very good fact sheet from the University of Wisconsin Extension about the care and pruning of stone fruits. You can see it at: http://learningstore.uwex.edu/assets/pdfs/A3639.PDF
