Black Medic

Asked June 12, 2018, 10:55 AM EDT

I would like to know if Black Medic is poisonous to horses or chickens. I find it in my fields this year. If you can not help me with this could you please lead me in the right direction. Thank you in advance, Ted Martin of Martin Meadows talkotown40@optonline.net

Somerset County New Jersey horses pastures and forages toxic plants poisonous plants

Hello,

I can respond from the horse end of things. It appears that black medic is just a nuisance plant and not actually toxic to them. However, with that being said if horses do consume anything that is novel to their diets in large amounts it could cause digestive upset or colic. Therefore it would be best if they had a lot of other forage available, either good grasses or hay.

I hope this helps!
