Tree care - new home owners

Asked June 11, 2018, 1:20 PM EDT

Dear Master Gardener, We have purchased a new home in Shoreview MN. It is our first home. There is an evergreen tree in the front yard that seems to be struggling. We are wondering if there is anything we can do to improve it's condition. We have been watering it since May regularly. There are two evergreens in the location. The other tree looks much healthier. Maybe it was damaged in a storm but we want to know what we should be doing to help preserve it if possible. Thank you very much. Images are attached. Andrew and Karla Schneider

Your tree in the first photo looks like it might be an old Colorado Blue Spruce. They were a poor choice years ago when people chose them due to their pretty color. They do not do well in Minnesota and are prone to needle cast disease. I would consider removing it. It will not improve. The other tree looks like it has dead needles too. Depending on how it looks you can clean out the dead needles and try to keep it as healthy as possible. Here is a link to info about the disease. http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/trees-shrubs/spruce-tree-diseases/rhizosphaera-needl...
