Crushed ferns

Asked June 8, 2018, 2:13 PM EDT

My next door neighbor had their tree cut down, and the person who did it thought our bed of ferns was the perfect place to drop the pieces. Now many of the ferns are crushed and broken. I’m sure they’ll come back fine next spring, but in the meantime should I cut back the ones that are damaged or leave them alone?

That's unfortunate. You can prune out any of the broken and badly bent pieces and just try to clean up the bed as best as you can. That's really all you can do. We wouldn't cut them all the way back to the ground. They will come back again next year.
