Starlings

Asked June 8, 2018, 12:03 PM EDT

We have recently moved to Independence OR from Oakridge. in Oakridge i fed all kinds of birds. Here, Starlings have showed up in bunches for the meal worms. i have read some things about these birds. Is this a bad idea to feed them? i think they are a beautiful bird but it seems they carry parsites. Are they a danger of any kind?

European starlings are a non-native, invasive species that out-competes our native birds for cavity nests and other resources and is therefore a threat to conservation of our native wildlife. It is not a good idea to host or feed starlings - They are very well adapted to "adopting" sources of easy meals and tend to perch in the hundreds. The Washington Dept of Fish & Wildlife has a great page with information about starlings, including how to "starling-proof" your feeders so you can still enjoy feeding and watching the native birds! https://wdfw.wa.gov/living/starlings.html
