Fig tree bark eaten last winter

Is tree dead or should I cut off to ground and hope it comes back. The tree is 4 years old and bore fruit the last 3 years. No sprouts or new growth so far. Evidently the protective wire fence was left open this winter and deer must have eaten bark. What to do? I can send picture if needed.

Scratch away some of the outer bark of the branches and see if there is any green tissue underneath. If there is green, the branches are still alive. If there is no green, they are dead and you can cut the branches to the ground. There is a demonstration of this in our brief video about figs:
