Mystery plant in my garden

Asked June 7, 2018, 10:36 AM EDT

This plant appeared early spring in my vegetable/perennial bed. I don't remember planting it. I've tried to id it myself with no success. It is about 3 feet tall, has opposite, sawtooth leaves in groups of four whorled around the stems. The green stems are mottled with dark spots. Thanks for your help.

This may be eupatorium maculatum. A common variety is "Gateway". We recommend that you let is produce a flower. If still unsure of the id, send us another photo.
