Pine trees dying

Asked June 7, 2018, 9:47 AM EDT

Is there a known disease for pine trees? We lost a Fraser fir last year and now my blue spruce is dying. I’ve noticed that several pine trees in our neighborhood are dying. Any ideas? Thank you.

Blue spruces almost always die of a fungal disease known as cytospora when the trees get mature. Here is information about it: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/cytospora-canker-spruce

ColoradoBlue spruce are not really happy in Maryland, and though planted extensively for their color, they ultimately die due to the climate here. Many have been dying the past few years because of increased heat, plus many are just at the right age to die.
Consequently, we can't recommend planting them.
