Is this a western red cedar tree?

Asked June 5, 2018, 9:17 PM EDT

We have a handful of trees we would like to take down to open up our property and are wondering what kind of tree this is. We are torn between a false cedar, or a real western red, or neither. Here are couple pics. Thank you, Melyssa and Daniel

Hi Melyssa and Daniel,

Thanks for your question. From what I can see here, this tree resembles a western redcedar, which is actually a "false cedar" or "new world cedar" as it belongs to the Cypress family and not the the Pine family like true cedars. If you look around on the ground or branches, you should see small rosebud-like cones, as well.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.
