Odd coloring

Asked June 4, 2018, 10:50 PM EDT

June 4 7:48 pm. Gold finches in the yard and one had the markings of a male but was almost white where the others were yellow. His beak was orange. Black markings were black. Curry county, Gold Beach, about 4 1/2 miles up Jerrys Flat Rd. Why the odd coloring?

We get reports of leucistic birds here and there, across several species. Essentially, the animal is lacking melanin in the cells that would normally provide the plumage color. There is more information, including a contrast to albinism, here https://www.bto.org/volunteer-surveys/gbw/gardens-wildlife/garden-birds/behaviour/plumage/leucism
