Cottonwood trees

Asked June 4, 2018, 8:44 PM EDT

I know the female trees produce the cotton, but my trees are so tall, I can't see which ones they are, I noticed some only have branches at the Top, where others have them all the way up. Will that tell me which are which?

Hello. Thanks for your question. The flowers and the seeds are really the best way of telling the sex of your tree. Sometimes branches with seeds will fall to the ground. There are many species within the Populus genus (commonly called "cottonwood") so to know the species and identify the sex with certainty you would need to send a photograph of the fruit and/or flowers.

I hope this is helpful.
