What is this large hornet ?

My wife found this large hornet and we want to identify it. Thanks

This is a European hornet, the only true hornet in Maryland (the rest of the hornet-looking insects are wasps.) It is attracted to light and occasionally can be a nuisance, or accidentally end up in a home. It it, however, beneficial because it eats pest insects. Thank-you very much for quick response and informative links. Family members were concerned it was the feared "Japanese Hornet". They will be relieved that it is not. I also appreciate the linked article explaining they are normally docile to people as long as they are left alone.

The Asian Giant hornet that is quickly found online is, fortunately, not found in the U.S. The Dept. of Ag. is monitoring to keep it out.
