Barren spot after tree renoval

We removed a pine tree about 3 months ago from our yard. We removed the stump, roots, and wood chips. Planned to add topsoil, level, and lay grass seed but we are now going into June. Should we wait til early fall or go ahead with seeding? If we wait to seed, should we also wait to add topsoil? And is there anything we can do to keep the soil from washing off during heavy storms?

We would wait. It is going to get hot soon and it's not easy to have success seeding turf due to weed pressure and hot weather.

You can add top soil mixed with Leaf Gro, compost or other organic material any time now. We suggest you mound it up and add more than you'd expect because you do have roots remaining underground that will tend to sink the area as they decay.

We'd suggest maybe planting annual flowers with mulch to hold the soil there until late summer into fall, which is the best time to seed tall fescue lawns.
