ridding iris garden of weeds

I have inherited a garden of many irises in rows. They are overgrown with a lot of weeds (grass, thistles, dandelions, etc). My question is: Is there anything like a spray that I can apply to get rid of the weeds without harming the irises and the rhizomes? Or is the only answer pulling the weeds by hand if I want to save the flowers. I know round-up will kill it all. Thanks for any help. Jeanette Pries

Many herbicides will kill your irises. Your best approach would be to hand pull, then mulch to inhibit future weed growth. Here is an interesting discussion of the use of herbicides around iris (please note that it is for Georgia):
